The author Mark Bridgeman, son of the late Brian Bridgeman, has completely re-written his father’s book on the history of Christ Church and the community it serves.

The book, written to celebrate the 170th Anniversary of Christ Church in 2021, provides a comprehensive study of the people and events that tell the story of almost a thousand years of history from the Doomsday Book to Coronavirus.

The Beacon on the Hill will surprise and entertain you with over 200 photographs and a special guide to the church.

All proceeds from the sale go towards the Friends of Christ Church.

Compline Services

2021-04-03T13:52:50+01:00

As we enter Lent we will hold a short service of Compline at 9.00pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. These will be live streamed from our Facebook page.

The ancient office of Compline derives its name from a Latin word meaning ‘completion’ (completorium). It is, above all, a service of quietness and reflection before rest at the end of the day.

It is most effective when the ending is indeed an ending, without additions, conversation or noise. If the service is in church, those present depart in silence; if at home, they go quietly to bed.

During each service a special chant is sung “Before the ending of the day” – you can hear it below.

You can download a copy of the order of service from this link. Compline Generic Christ Church 2021 v1

A letter from Bishop Viv

2021-03-10T13:28:09+00:00

Dear Friends,

I last wrote to you in November with an update on Transforming Church, and how we are seeking to discern God’s vision for our Diocese in the coming years.

All our lives have continued to be severely disrupted becauseof Covid, and there is still much hardship, loss and challenge in the communities we serve. Through those disruptions the work of the church, its prayer and proclamation have continued. Groups continue to plan for our response to the climate emergency, our work towards greater racial and social justice and our preparation to learn together as a national church through Living in Love and Faith. Over the Christmas season work on Transforming Churchhas continued in earnest.

Update on our Covid Response

2021-03-10T13:28:29+00:00

Dear Friends

Simon

In response to the number of Covid infections in Swindon and the pressure on our local hospital, the P.C.C, Covid response working group had a very positive and honest meeting on Wednesday 27th January and as a result, the decision was taken to continue to close for public worship at Christ Church and St Mary’s.

The church however will remain open daily for personal prayer and Sunday services will continue to be recorded and made available each week on our CC website.

We will remain closed for public worship during February including Ash Wednesday 17th February. However, a recorded service will be made available as we enter into Lent and look forward to Easter.

Introducing The Wellbeing Journey

2021-03-10T13:28:42+00:00

The Wellbeing Journey is a new series to help churches and communities address the challenges of our times. Following the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, local churches are in a unique place to lead communities on this holistic journey to physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

HOPE Together and KingsGate Church, Peterborough, have developed a video journey drawing on Kingsgate’s Wellbeing sermon series and the book ‘God’s Plan for Your Wellbeing’ by their lead pastor Dr Dave Smith. The videos are presented by Simon Thomas (Prime Video Sport/ Sky Sports/ Blue Peter) and  Joanna Adeyinka-Burford (BBC, Channel 5, Nickelodeon), with contributions from leading experts in different fields.

Good News from the Community Centre team

2021-02-09T13:34:25+00:00

We are delighted to let you know that the community centre team have been successfully awarded three grants. The first two grants are to be spent on our afternoon teas programme which provides a vital means of socialisation for older people and particularly those suffering with dementia. They have come from the Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Partnership and Green Square.

The final grant has come from emergency covid funding issued by the National Lottery Community Fund on behalf of the Government. This money is specifically to be spent on the running costs of the community centre. This helps to safeguard the work of our community centre and team in the year ahead.

Supporter Relations – Send a Cow

Today is Blue Monday, supposedly the gloomiest day of the year. A day where we face a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and awaiting the first payday of the new year. And as the World continues to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s no surprise we are all feeling a little blue. Send a Cow is one of Christ Church’s nominated charities. We were delighted to recieve this update from them with some positive news.

Meet Merima, pictured left. Merima lives in Kutaber District, Ethiopia with her husband and children. Along with 600 other women, Merima is part of the Developing Business Women Project, which supports family farmers like her to establish successful and sustainable agri-businesses.

Merima says

"Send a Cow has supported me with awareness and skills. I have received training on kitchen gardening, savings and credit and reproductive health. Of all the skills I have learned, I am really amazed by the bag garden. I have learned that we can produce food even if we don't have any land." - Merima

Our Parish Verse for 2021

2021-02-09T13:35:01+00:00

Each year, we choose a bible verse to focus on to provide us with hope and inspiration for the new year.

This year’s verse is from Peter

Blessed be the God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
By his great mercy he has given us a new birth
into a living hope through the resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the dead.
