We have recently completed an application to the Diocese of Bristol for plans to decommission our former Ashes Rose Garden which is now closed for further burials.

This applies for permission to make improvements to the Rose Garden to make it a more beautiful, manageable and fitting memorial to the over 1,300 Swindonians who are remembered there.

Over the years, the ground has become infertile and many of the plants are old and diseased. Due to the obvious sensitivities involved, we have proceeded carefully with our thinking and have consulted widely with experts in design and horticulture.

You can read the application here. The application process calls for a period of consultation with the public for a period of 30 days. Read about them by clicking the link below.

What to expect

The new design will greatly improve the Rose Garden and enable it to be managed in a way that will allow us to properly respect and honour those remembered there.

The exisiting plaques will be retained, but, remembering that many whose remains rest here do not have a marker, we have put together a full record of names of all those at rest there.

You can search this database here

The new planting scheme will have raised beds with new soil and plants so all existing planting wll be removed once permission to proceed has been given. The raised beds allow us to proceed without disturbing the ashes buried below.

Some families, reacting to the, previously, poor state of the garden, have planted their own shrubs and plants. If you have done this and wish to retain your plants, then you should contact us as soon as possible, as all existing plants will be replaced as part of the overall improvement plan.
