Operation Christmas Child

2013-12-23T01:36:49+00:00
The Power Of A Simple GiftOperation Christmas Child is the world’s largest children’s Christmas project, run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse. They have been sending gift-filled shoeboxes around the world since 1990, bringing joy and the hope of Jesus Christ into the lives of over 100 million underprivileged children.
Right now, churchgoers across the UK are busy wrapping, packing and filling shoeboxes with great little gifts for children in need overseas.
The deadline for boxes is Sunday November 17th so there is plenty of time to get your shoebox ready. This is what you need:
  1. Get hold of an empty shoebox, some wrapping paper and some little gifts – what sort of gifts should I include – how do I pack the box? read more here
  2. Visit this page to make your £2.50 shipping donation or put it in an envelope and attach it to your shoebox
  3. Bring your shoebox to sunday club (@10.00am Sunday service)or drop it into the parish office (36 Cricklade Street) in good time for the 17th November.

You can see a video about Operation Christmas Child and it’s work here

Community Centre Update

2013-12-09T17:40:42+00:00

The interior of the new centre is almost finished – there was a slight delay as the floor has not dried sufficiently to allow the floorers to fit the new floor. A further inspection will be carried out next Tuesday and if successful, the floor will be laid on the following day. The underfloor heating is up and running, the solar panels are ready to be commissioned ( if the sun ever shines again). The decorators are finishing off the final touches, the hearing aid loop is fitted ready for the audio system, plumbers are ready to fit the loos as soon as the floor is fitted. The electrics are finished.2013-10-08 14.45.50

You may notice that the two large yew trees that threatened to block the access and light to the centre have now been cut down. We received permission from both the council and the Diocese on the condition that we replace them with two similar trees. We intend to reinstate two new Iberian Yews on either side of the new main entrance pathway.

The roadway works were  necessary to comply with current fire safety regulations and have caused a degree of difficulty for which we apologise. The kerbs and bases have all been finished and the levels sorted so we are ready for the tarmac team next Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st.  The work will be noisy and dirty and for safety reasons it will be necessary to close both the church and the car park for those 2 days. Everything should be back to normal however ( with nice flat paths) by the end of next week.

We hope to be able to confirm a date for the congregation to take a first look around the centre very soon. Look at the photo gallery here.

Nationwide and Intel do their bit for the Community!

2013-11-08T02:04:49+00:00

On the afternoon of Thursday 12th September a group of 10 volunteers from Intel came to Christ Church and started to help with the preparations for the new Community Centre Garden. They spent the afternoon breaking up wood from trees that had been kindly cut down by local gardener and congregation member Ian Handy.

Intel Volunteer workers

The weather was wonderful and the volunteers were buzzing at the opportunity to get away from their computers and to put in some real physical labour.

They also had time to help out with some planting of flowers and tidied up some of the graves at the front of the church in time for the Autumn Fayre on the 14th September.

The next group of volunteers came to Christ Church on Friday 20th September. They were from Nationwide, aged between 18 and 55 and were very keen and  raring to go well before the agreed start time of 9am.

After 4 days of solid rain, the sun was shining brightly and we were truly blessed by this as everyone was very pleased to spend the day away from their desks with a chance of getting a sun tan. The morning was spent finishing off the demolition of the tree wood as well as weeding, levelling and generally tidying the garden area at the back of the new Community Centre. Thanks to this excellent work, the garden is now ready to be landscaped, and  made good for the future users of the Community Centre @ Christ Church to enjoy.

The afternoon was spent weeding and tidying up the rose garden at the back of the church, the difference was amazing and one person visiting a grave of his loved ones thanked the volunteers for what they were doing. He was generally grateful that they had given up their time and their efforts had really touched him.

Jess Robinson aged 18 from Nationwide said that the day had been great for team building, it had given them a good sense of achievement to complete something and had really helped to boost team morale. Another one of the volunteers had never gardened before and also learnt something new as he had never known the difference between a weed and a flower before.

The help of volunteers is vital to the future of the Community Centre and these volunteers have really helped to make a great start to making the area surrounding the Community Centre a pleasure to see.

Stewardship Campaign – We are all in this together.

2013-10-26T19:47:40+01:00

As a charity, Christ Church relies on the generosity of our members and friends to ensure that we make the maximum impact of our Christian faith in our Swindon community and further afield. At least once a year we have a particular focus on financial giving. We share what the Bible says about giving and what we have achieved in recent months and what we plan to achieve in the coming year.  At the beginning of this month we sent out a number of Pledge packs to members on the Church electoral roll  – this invited them to review their giving to the church for the coming year and let us know what they can commit to. This helps us to predict our income for next year and how much we can budget for both our own mission and that of the Bristol Diocese. Remember the church doesn’t get any outside financial help from the government – all our income comes from our friends and supporters.

If you have not received a pack but would like to join us in supporting the work and mission of Christ Church in our local community and further afield then you can download the pledge document and a leaflet explaining our financial position.

Pledge2014 – please return in confidence to Stephen Grosvenor, Gift Aid Secretary, 51a Broome Manor Lane, Swindon, SN3 1NB

Stewardship2013 – a document explaining about our finances and mission.

Standing order mandate – give to Christ Church regularly via a standing order with your bank.

Remember also that, provided you are a UK tax payer, any gift you make may be eligible for gift aid which allows us to claim up to 20% back from the tax office. Find out more here and download a gift aid form.

Community Centre Artwork Project

2013-11-08T02:04:17+00:00

Laurie PLocal artist Laurie Plant has been hard at work producing preliminary sketches and drawings for the Community Centre artwork project. He has been seen seated at his easel in a number of prominent locations across Old Town and there has been a great deal of interest in his work. Earlier this year, Cilla Slipper led an Old Town walk around the town to produce ideas for iconic locations or buildings to be included in the finished work. The local community have been invited to put forward their ideas for what landmarks or features make Old Town special. Laurie is excited by the project.

“I couldn’t have predicted how much interest I’ve had in the Christ Church Art Project.

So many people, hundreds, have stopped to look at the large, ambitious pastel and watercolour drawings I’ve been making around Old Town.
Everyone is joining in by offering ideas about the choice of Iconic buildings and places we have here. I’m trying to include them all in this art commission for our fabulous new Community Hall.
To follow the project, keep an eye on laurieplant.com and look out for the forthcoming exhibition of his other Iconic paintings of London and Swindon at The Museum and Art Gallery in Bath Rd.
The community Centre is due to be open in early November.

Community Centre Progress

2013-10-26T19:47:57+01:00

As many of you will have noticed, the ground works are seriously underway at Christ Church at the moment. The large trenches that have been cut are to provide an independent 3 phase electrical power supply to the new centre. This will prevent the problems we get now with insufficient electrical loading between the church’s electrics and the centres.Front trench The under floor heating is being installed  next week, as are the doors and windows so at last the building will be properly secure. Our solar panels have been installed and will be ready to start delivering 20kw of electricity once connected (and when the sun shines!)2013-09-10 12.21.06

Do take care around the church paths as they are unavoidably muddy and, for the next few weeks, will continue to be rather uneven in places.

We are still looking for volunteers to help to run the many different aspects of the centre so if you have a little spare time and energy please contact our development manager Christ Smith and introduce yourself – his number is 07582 305760 or email him on chris.smith@ccccswindon.co.uk

We are still on target to finish the building by the end of October.

You can see the full picture gallery of our building project here.

As some of you may have seen, we are once again in the local paper – you can read the article here.

Minutes of the Buildings & Site Development Committee Meeting – 4th Sept 2013

2013-09-06T15:19:05+01:00

Present :  Stephen Grosvenor, Mike Palmer, Reg Hardwick, John Plaister,Lynda Fisher  – Aplogies: Kevin Penfold, Daniel Pitt, Mark Antell,

Item 1. SG said a short prayer.

Lynda explained that she was attending meetings of each of the church committee groups offering support and checking that everything was working as envisioned.

Item 2. Minutes of last meeting – reviewed –

All outstanding items have been included in the agenda.

Item 3. –Budget Summary  – see cumulative spend at the end of these minutes. Still well within this year’s allocation. There are some issues relating to expenditure under the CC project that may for accounting purposes be better expressed in general building costs. SG to discuss with Ian on his return from holiday.

Item 4. – Christ Church

 a)   West porch Project. AFK has produced a design and plans and elevations suitable for submission to the DAC for licencing purposes. We have however deferred doing this as we hope to include the new AV console position in the application. Bernard is working on a design and AFK will incorporate it for us into the Plans. We are aiming to submit an application by the October DAC meeting with a view to proceeding in Spring 2014 subject to final agreement from the PCC.

b)   Action SG to discuss Roof material and light in the porch with AFK.

b) LED Lighting – The new lighting fitments are nearly ready and we hope to start the trial in the Lady Chapel in by the end of September. We will aim to get reactions from people throughout the winter months and review the position in Spring.

 c) AV update – We will need to re-position the AV control console once the new porch is built. Although Bernard and Mike have done a number of new microphone installations themselves and saved a significant amount of money, we are still some way off agreeing a final specification for the AV – with particular regard to video, projection capabilities and screens. Also a possible upgrade for the organ and choir recording capabilities has yet to be agreed. JP has identified an innovative possible screen made of special glass which may obviate the need for expensive and potentially intrusive control mechanisms for the screen. ACTION: SG to investigate prices and technology further.

d). Damaged South transept window/Repointing. Dan Pitt has contacted AFK for advice and has the names of some masons to approach for quotes. Our advice is that the repair should be done in the next 18 months or so. The Friends have already offered to help to offset some of the costs for this project JP has also identified an area on the north transept wall which needs re-pointing/repair. We have a reasonable quote from Rob Flemming for this work. We will aim to get a further quote with a view to carrying out the job prior to winter.

f) Asbestos removal from old boiler room. This action is carried forward. We have already had an estimate and this work should now be done once the CC contractors have cleared the site. ACTION MP to find quote and confirm costs – proposal is to proceed to get the works completed so we can continue to safely use the storage.

Item 5. St Mary’s Church – This action carried forward again- the paintwork in St Mary’s is in a poor state of repair. We will add it to the work in progress list and review options for getting it done. ACTION MP to see if Community Service Volunteers would do it.

 Item 6 Community Centre update

a)   The building completion date is still on target for the end of October. There has been a robbery of copper piping from the site and the contractor has taken steps to protect the site until next week when it will be securable. Internal boarding is complete; Solar panels have been installed on the roof. We have agreed the kitchen design and will be placing an equipment order in the next few days. The Friends of Christ Church have kindly donated £4k towards it. Doors and windows will be installed next week. The underfloor heating will be installed shortly afterwards.

b)   Cost updates –as a result of the building regulation inspection, we have now received a quote for the improvement of the roadways and paths around the west of the church. We are required, for fire access, to widen and improve some of our pathways. This cost has exceeded our initial estimates by a significant amount and as a result we are looking for savings in the cost scheme to offset this overspend as far as possible. On the positive side, we are hoping to receive significantly more than budgeted from the sale of the Parish office so this will further help to mitigate the costs.

 c)    Rubbish arrangments – The contract with Biffa seems to be working ok and the rubbish from the burial ground is under control at the moment. We will need to continue to review the situation once the centre is operational.

 d)   Paths & Lighting – we have received an innovative proposal from Binary electronics for path lighting in and around the Community centre. This will use LED low wattage bollard lights which will be controllable and highly cost effective to operate.

 e)   Garden of Reflection – we have asked the winner of the garden design to extend her design to incorporate the area to the north which was previously intended to be used as storage. We are receiving invaluable help and advice from Ian Handy re the garden itself. ACTION – MP to follow up with Ian.

 f)    Area outside the East end of the centre. – we still don’t have a design for this space but intend to produce one in the next couple of weeks. We have agreed with the building contractor that levels can be established whilst he is preparing the ground for the paths etc ACTION – SG & DP to measure up and produce an outline plan for the garden

Item 7 Property Checks –

As a  result of Annual Property check carried out on 32. Points a & b are outstanding

a)   Work Outstanding – Re-plastering required following difficulties with damp and mould in the dining room. ACTION MP to recommend some plasterers to occupant so that she can arrange for them to visit and quote.

b)   Work outstanding  – PV Front doorshould be replaced as it doesn’t fit properly and is very drafty Karen has had details of plasterers but hasn’t acted on them yet

Item 8 Any other business

Next Meeting: 6th November 7.30 – Community Centre@Christ Church room to be confirmed.

“No excuse for not having something to put in the collection!”

Our own Brian Harris recently made a trip to Glasgow where he came across the Destiny Church. They are non-denominational, and hold to traditional evangelical Christian values, but express church life in a contemporary way.

Pastor Andrew Owen describes the church as a contemporary apostolic Christian movement that thinks like social entrepreneurs.

I’m not entirely sure what that means but they are taking a very pragmatic view on servicing their congregation’s needs!
