Help us spread the Word

2020-12-14T19:38:16+00:00

Do you love communicating through film? We would like to film and share more of our worship and ministry, but we need more volunteers behind the camera and people to edit.

If we can, we would also like to purchase equipment enabling us to live stream services in Christ Church for those who cannot join us in church. The cost of this will be around £4,200. If you can help us with a donation or would like to know more about volunteering, please contact Simon Stevenette, tel 529166 or Stephen Grosvenor tel, 341034. (stephen@christchurchswindon.co.uk)

Annual Parochial Church Meeting 25th October

2020-10-31T17:39:19+00:00

Christ church in the mist

It has been a strange year this year. Our A.P.C.M. (Annual Parochial Church Meeting) was deferred due to the restrictions and so we were unable to close off our usual formal review of the past year and plans for the coming year. We are now able to hold our A.P.C.M. which will be held in the Church immediately following this Sunday’s (25th October) service. Social distancing measures will be enforced.

New Text Giving scheme

2021-02-09T13:36:58+00:00

These days, Christ Church rarely has a plate collection for donations during services, although there is always an Offertory plate at the rear of the church before and during services.

If you find yourself without change though but have your mobile phone handy you can donate to the work of Christ Church via a simple text.

All you need to do is send a text with the code CCSWINDON £5 ( or however much you wish to give us) to 70450.

The acknowledgement of your text has a link allowing you to agree to add Gift aid to your gift (worth an extra 25% to us at no extra cost to you) if you are a UK taxpayer.

There are a number of ways to give to support the church and its work. You can find out details of how to give to our work in the community here.

Thank you

Ways to continue your financial support for Christ Church

2020-11-10T12:08:44+00:00

During the coronavirus emergency, our church, like many organisations today, is suffering severely from a lack of funds.

Our finance team is working hard to implement cost savings whilst still allowing us to maintain a clear and effective presence in the community. We are especially grateful to our many regular givers, either as members of the Parish Giving Scheme or as donors via regular standing order for their continued support.

Like everyone, we are exploring new ways to connect with our congregation and friends. These include a new Pastoral contact scheme called Keep in Touch (K.i.T.). This will be administered by volunteers from our Community and is aimed at ensuring that everyone is regularly contacted and, if required, practical help or reassurance can be provided. We are recording our Sunday services and these can be found on our website. You can find out more about both these on www.christchurchswindon.co.uk.

Inevitably though, income from plate collections, the community centre, church events, weddings and funerals has dried up, leaving us in an increasingly difficult financial position. Fortunately, we do have some contingency reserves and our cost savings and government cost mitigation schemes will help. Unfortunately, this will not last for very long.

How can you help?

By Regular Planned Giving

Regular giving enables us to plan our work and helps reduce administration time and effort as well as improving our cashflow.

  1. Our preferred option to give to Christ Church – If you have not yet joined our Parish Giving scheme, this is an efficient way to regularly support our church and its community. Contact our gift aid secretary- Stephen@christchurchswindon.co.uk or ring 07885 217077 for more information.
  2. You can also donate safely via our Just giving site: https://www.justgiving.com/christchurchswindon/donate or click the button below
By direct transfer or regular standing order to Christ Church

Lunchtime Organ Recitals a great success

2020-10-17T20:02:36+01:00

Tim Eyles, our Director of Music, has completed a series of 4 lunchtime recitals on our recently refurbished organ to raise much needed funds for both the church and The Friends of Christ Church.

Thank you to all of you who supported Tim and gave generously. His recitals raised more than £250, split between the Friends and the Church. The organ can still be heard in the 2nd and 4th Sunday 10 am services or you can catch up with a recording of the service each week, after 1pm.

If you missed the chance to hear our organ in full flow, you can hear an extract below.

Season of Creation

2020-12-14T19:39:23+00:00

As we develop together as Eco congregations across our Old Town Partnership, Harvest Thanksgiving and Creation tide have an increasing significance. These days, from 1st September into October have been designated the International Season of Creation. This year the global reach of Covid 19 has revealed anew our shared human nature and the interconnectedness of our lives, economies, healthcare systems, food chains, energy and transportation systems. The pandemic has also demonstrated that this complex web is rooted in the earth and limited by the earth’s capacity to sustain our economic and ecological needs. The unjust effects of climate change are a consequence of our inability to find a sustainable balance of this web.

The Bells are ringing

2020-09-24T13:03:42+01:00

To mark the end of the Second World War, the bells rang out at Christ Church. Here’s an extract of the goose-bump ringing that took place on 15th August at 11am after 2 minutes of silence. A big thank you to ringers Gordon, Shirley, Alan, Peter and Ruth. Socially distanced ringing meant they rang call changes and some plain hunting.

Time to reflect?

2020-08-29T14:04:25+01:00

‘Time’ to look up again! Our clock mechanism is back and keeping perfect time.

The clock was originally installed in Holy Rood Church, on the Lawn, in 1843 and has been in the Christ Church clock tower since 1851. Its repair was made possible by legacies left to the charity Friends of Christ Church. We thank the Friends for all that they do. Black Lives Matter

2020-08-29T14:57:36+01:00

A personal perspective

The events that have unfolded since George Floyd’s very public killing has caused me to catch my breath, pause — pause, and exhale.

Revd Dr Catherine Okoronkwo

As a writer I often find myself penning a poem to process my thoughts and feelings in response to confronting issues. The rawness of my poetry at this time reflects the place of pause I find myself in as I catch my breath.

But in writing these poems, I realise that not a thousand words nor a single word can fully articulate my strength of emotion. Like a wound that is constantly scabbed in my day-to-day lived experiences, the reality of life as a black woman is magnified again and again when public events like the George Floyd case occur.

As a person of colour, I’ve experienced a range of emotions in the last few weeks: tired, crushed, angry, frustrated, bewildered. My parents lived with racial injustice. I live with racial injustice. And, if things don’t change, my daughter’s generation will live with racial injustice.

It’s incredible that, in 2020, we still witness persecution and aggression against people of colour. Black and brown skinned people have endured decades of injustices. In recent history we note: the deaths of Stephen Lawrence and Mark Duggan (among countless others), the Grenfell Tower disaster, the Windrush scandal, an increase in knife crimes among black youths, and the higher impact of Covid-19 deaths on key workers from BAME backgrounds. How many more black and brown lives have to be lost before we work together – black, brown, and white – to see a real change in society?

I Can’t breath

2020-08-27T19:51:26+01:00

Rage rises

tongues of flame

sear bones, sinew and muscle

wrapped in brown skin

limbs writhe against batons

lips swell with beatings

eyes bleed, jaw cracks

wrapped in brown skin

shackled. starved. raped.

gouged. hunted. choked.

lynched. poked. injected.

stripped. drowned. expelled.

trampled. airbrushed. kneed.

medicated. gassed. gunned

down

down

down

years of white knuckles and heels

kick up dust clouds

in cotton fields, ghettos, tower blocks

brown skin burns,

turns flesh to dust dust dust

fills nostrils, clogs windpipes

Until

I can’t breathe
