Western Flyer Wander

2013-09-04T13:20:50+01:00

Marking time…along the Western Flyer is an exciting participatory arts project being delivered by Create Studios in its 30th anniversary year. Led by artist Scott Farlow, the project is part of the new enhancements to the Western Flyer cycle and pedestrian route, funded through Swindon Travel Choices. Western_flyer_flyer_screen

The project aims to increase the profile of the route by raising awareness of the rich heritage and social history that it passes through, and using the archive of local photographer William Hooper.  …marking time…along the Western Flyer will involve three local neighbourhoods, the West Swindon, North Central and Town Centre localities throughout Autumn 2013. Residents of all ages are invited to participate in a series of imaginative activities that will explore the Western Flyer route to create and share new stories across Swindon. In Spring 2014 there will be a touring exhibition of short films, new photographs, web pages and a new app.

Partnership Fund Raising News

2013-08-08T13:27:20+01:00

Congratulations to Sue Oxborrow and her group who raised an incredible £760-08 at their car boot sale.  Well done!  This brings the total raised across the partnership to £2,141-65.tea-party-table-rep0507-de1

The committee would now like to hold an Open Garden day on either 20/21 or 27/28 July depending on how many gardens would be available on these dates.

If you would be prepared to open your garden to visitors and perhaps sell tea / coffee or soft drinks we would like to hear from you.  A list of gardens would be drawn up and programmes sold for £5. With enough gardens to visit and some good weather this could be a good fund raising activity we can all share.

Next Messy Church this Sunday

2013-05-29T19:52:27+01:00

We had a great response to the first Messy Church at King William Street in April. Now its time for the next one. You can find out all about Messy Church on our website or Facebook pages

worship2

Messy Church is completely different to traditional church services. The idea is for all ages together to be creative through the activities, have fun and to share a meal together while discovering something about the Christian faith.sisters

It is a different way of doing and being church and it is all about reaching out to the community and we are therefore delighted to be in partnership with King William Street School. Messy Church has grown all across the country and this has been a fantastic start in Old Town

Successful Concert

Emily Barker with the Red Clay Halo

Emily Barker with the Red Clay Halo

Last Saturday, Christ Church hosted a concert featuring music from local and international performers. REFUGE is a celebration of female music talent, which raises money for an excellent cause – Swindon Women’s Aid.   The headline act for this unique event was Emily Barker and the Red Clay HaloHailing from Bridgetown, Western Australia, Emily Barker is a compelling songwriter with a gift for weaving melody and words. Supporting acts included Colour the Atlas, Jen Olive and Swindon based Faye Rogers. The concert was really well attended and the church was beautifully decorated with candles, creating a wonderful atmosphere.

Marie Lennon, the concert organiser told us:

“The event was a incredibly special evening, and felt like a magical night for all those who attended and performed. Christ Church proved to be an amazing venue for the concert, and so many people commented on how stunning the church is. I have no doubt that it would have not been nearly as successful, or memorable without the kindness and generosity of the people from Christ Church – who supported Refuge, and therefore Swindon Women’s Aid with open arms. I hope an event like this can happen again in this very special place.”

The concert raised at least £1,000 and received generous sponsorship from both Honda and the Co-op and was the product of lots of work from the Refuge team. You can find out more about Swindon Women’s Aid here. If you can bear to listen find out why Swindon Women’s Aid is so important in this interview given to Marie Lennon.

Concert in aid of Women’s Refuge – 4th May

2013-05-06T21:46:40+01:00

refuge concertREFUGE is a celebration of female music talent, which raises money for an excellent cause – Swindon Women’s Aid. It will bring 4 brilliant acts to Christ Church Swindon on Saturday 4th May
2013.

The headline act for this unique event is Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo. Hailing from Bridgetown, Western Australia, Emily Barker is a compelling songwriter with a gift for weaving melody and words. Her talent is perfectly complimented by the magnificent arrangements of her band The Red Clay Halo, whose rootsy ensemble playing underpins Barker’s agile vocal blend of strength and fragility. This is the first time she’s playing in Swindon.  You can find out more about her and the band here.

Tickets are now on sale via www.seetickets.com, search for REFUGE. Tickets cost £8 each (plus £1 booking fee, enforced by see tickets)

There will be complimentary wine and cake available to every ticket holder. Tickets will be available on the door at £10 each. Every penny of the ticket price will go directly to Swindon Women’s Aid.

The doors will open at 7pm, with music starting at 7.30pm on Saturday 4th May.

The event page is www.facebook.com/refugeeventswindon, and the charity website is www.swindonwomensaid.org
