P1030212 P1030215The Friends of Christ Church Trustees thank everyone who  helped make the Christmas Charity market on 21 November such a success. Everyone who came enjoyed it; all the  participating charities and community organisations made a profit (there were 36) and over £4,300 was raised including  £800 for church charities.  All would like to return if we plan an event in November 2016.

The Friends welcome new members – annual membership is £5 for singles and £10 for families; life membership is £75 –  forms are at the back of the church or on the website.  Members are also eligible to join the winning organising  team of Trustees – Caroline Hallatt (chair), Peter Ford (secretary), Julia Kablak (treasurer), Caroline Pitt, (membership secretary), Margaret Williams, Pam Bridgeman and Christine Senior. (Simon, Mike and Daniel are also Trustees because of their offices.)

Dear Friends

Thank you so much for all your encouragement with the Football Fans in Training course I have been participating in at Swindon Town run by our Football in the Community team over the last 3 months; quite simply one of the best things I have been involved with in my life! It has felt like a 12 week retreat in so many ways.
Tonight was a wonderful celebration. The group of 30 of us have lost together 43.8 stones! Each of us were set a target to lose between 5-10% of our body weight.
I was very honoured to win the prize for the highest percentage of body weight lost, 18.4% and for the most centimetres lost around the chest 18.5 cms. Overall I have lost over 21/2 stone and now weigh 11 stone 9 lbs! The challenge obviously is maintaining this weight. Many moving conversations and I was thrilled to hear virtually the whole group will be coming with their families to the Swindon Town Carol service next Thursday 6.30pm to celebrate! There will be a lot of publicity locally.

We will be playing the Manchester City football fans in training at the Etihad in February/March. Also we have been invited to help mentor the next course which begins at the end of January

Very specially I travelled tonight to the gym with Gary and Jo, I married them at Christ Church in August 2001, they are having a marriage thanksgiving at the same time in 2017.

As I said in my speech tonight I couldn’t have done this without the support of the 30 guys and the excellent leadership of Shane, Jon and Louise who have taught us all a great deal. Thank you each of you for all of your support to Nicola and I . Nicola jokes that I am now less weight than before I first knew her 33 years ago!!! Anyone like to join me for a run tomorrow and my first Pilates class at our Christ church Community centre?

Simon

Operation Christmas Child

2015-12-22T12:50:26+00:00

We are planning to once again support Operation Christmas Child’s Shoebox Appeal.  Please can you begin to gather items of stationery, toys, toiletries, sweets (not chocolate) and other suitable small personal items ready to bring to church on the first three Sundays in November (a list of suitable items can be found at www.samaritans-purse.org.uk or at the back of church) when we hope to be able to pack a good number of shoeboxes to send around the world to make a difference to children’s lives.  We have kindly had a donation of some 50 empty shoeboxes and it would be great to fill them all! If you don’t have a shoebox then please bring your gifts to church and we will pack them for you.

It costs just £3 to transport each gift box across the world so if you can – please include £3 towards this.

Thank you on behalf of Operation Christmas Child and all the happy children you will help this Christmas.Christmas Child

A message from Carol – Brave the Shave

2015-12-22T12:27:37+00:00

Carol I decided some time ago to do a head shave to stand alongside a very brave lady who lost her hair to chemotherapy whilst suffering from breast cancer – the beautiful Katie. Her hair is now back but she  was so courageous when it was gone I felt I needed to do this for her and others like her. I also lost both of my parents to cancer when they were in their 50s – where I am now – so I want to dedicate this crazy act to their memory!

You can sponsor me easily on line here: https://bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers/carol-simmons/

If you are not a Internet kind of person then catch me one Sunday soon.

The date it will be done is Sunday 8th November at lunchtime in the Community Centre @ Christ Church.  To watch there will be an admission charge unless you have already sponsored me.  (For causes I believe in I am ruthless…)  My girls will be on the door with collection buckets…for money, not my hair.

COME ON, SPONSOR ME. I love my hair so I want AT LEAST £1000 for this. We can do it!!!!

Prayer for refugees

2016-04-10T01:43:10+01:00

The following might be helpful as we hold the situation, across Europe and the Middle East, before God

refugeesHeavenly Father,
you are the source of all goodness, generosity and love.
We thank you for opening the hearts of many
to those who are fleeing for their lives.
Help us now to open our arms in welcome,
and reach out our hands in support.
That the desperate may find new hope,
and lives torn apart be restored.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, Our Lord,
who fled persecution at His birth
and at His last triumphed over death.  Amen

Old Town Beer Festival 2015 – Christ Church

2015-05-25T17:43:28+01:00

IMG_0119

Christ Church is one of the few remaining historic buildings in everyday use in Swindon. It is grade II * listed but receives no government or central grants. It therefore relies on the goodwill and generosity of its congregation, friends and local community to continue its role of providing baptism, marriage and funeral services to Swindon. The Beer festival plays a big part in raising funds for and awareness of Christ Church in the area. More than 600 people sampled the hospitality at Christ Church (and the beer and cider).

Our Church Plan

2015-05-06T23:23:29+01:00

ChristchurchpencilSince work began on development and renewal at Christ Church, we have spent a lot of time reviewing our plans, gaining information from other church’s experiences and planning and building our Community Centre. In all this detail of practical and logical decision making, it is often easy to forget why we originally set out on this journey. Do take some time if you can to read our vision for this church.

We have a vision that Christ Church and its site should be at the heart of Swindon serving the needs of local people and becoming a useful meeting place for a whole variety of community activities. Continuing and developing what we do well now but also looking to meet future needs. Christ Church was built 160 years ago and has been part of the Old Town Partnership of Churches with Bath Road Methodist church and Immanuel United Reformed church for more than 40 years. Our vision is ‘Connecting the Community with Christ’. Many visitors remark on the beauty of Christ Church, a place of serenity and peace in the midst of a very busy town but while the building is beautiful outside, inside it is cluttered and tired and expensive to maintain.

We want to bring a resurrection feel to the Church that Swindon can really be proud of, serving our town through the 21st century and beyond. Through the development and renewal of Christ Church we will have a lighter, warmer more comfortable and flexible place to meet, and from which to expand its outreach.

Our vision is that Christ Church and the newly rebuilt community centre will be in use throughout the week; morning, afternoons and evenings. There will be an enhanced awe and wonder about the church building which will be full of God’s presence. We intend to operate both the church and the Community hall for the benefit of all, trusting that our openness and outward looking attitude will establish our whole site as a valuable resource for our local community. We look forward to hosting many concerts, creative arts, community celebrations, conferences, school events and artistic exhibitions in both the church and hall.

Our vision is our site will increasingly pay for itself, allowing us to develop our pastoral care, listening and healing ministries and to look outwards sharing God’s heart for mission and outreach within Swindon and across the world. As a Christian community we passionately believe that God works in every scene of life and wants us to expand our perspective of his activity and presence in all things. We believe that God wants us to have the gift of imagination. By enabling this to happen we can play our part in connecting the whole community of Swindon through outstanding buildings and service that bring the best of the past alongside the needs of the present.

We would like everyone at Christ Church to work together to achieve this vision for Christ Church to keep it at the heart of Swindon for the next 160 years.

Parish Verse for 2015

2015-05-02T13:19:05+01:00

Members of our church family have been thinking about our parish verse for 2015. See Brian’s take on it below – the product of a recent Search Light service,

Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.

They shall mount up with wings like eagles.

They shall run and not be weary.

They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

In Search Light today we were looking at the parish verse. In particular, and at my request, we focussed considerably on the first line “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength”. I was struggling with the word “wait”. It seemed to me to be a word suggesting -just hang around and it will all happen. I don’t need to do anything.  This led me to wonder, were others thinking the same? Looking at other bible versions the word Hope or Trust is used. I got that. Those words spoke to me they seemed active –  me doing something.

The Recovery Bible says Isaiah 40:1- 66:24  is a message of hope, there’s that word  and through these words we can recognise that God’s ultimate purpose for his people is always their blessing. Clearly I needed help in understanding this and my friends were there to guide me to an understanding.

Wait, as a Hebrew translation means enduring, gaining strength through endurance. I wasn’t sure. There was a suggestion that it was a man thing. Wait! Oh no, we need to do something.

And then  with further input from friends the light came on “patient waiting but with expectation”. Patience to listen to what God is doing in our lives, waiting. Remember being told to listen to our teachers at school. Did we? I know I didn’t, well not always. And listening is not enough. We need to listen actively to make a difference. Likewise we need to actively “wait”. So trust and hope in the Lord, wait patiently and actively follow the path he lays before us.

Flying the flags at Christ Church

2015-03-08T17:58:00+00:00

The variety of flags flown lately at Christ Church has attracted much interest – and a few complaints about the propriety of its displaying flags other than Diocesan or Union.  The use of other flags to affirm particular groups or individuals on significant occasions does no harm, but a surprising amount of good:  most poignantly when the “Stars and Stripes” was raised on the tenth anniversary of “9/11”.  We thought no more of it until a heartfelt note was found later on a scrap of paper in the church:  “Thank you so much for flying my flag.  The love and solidarity of this church means so much on this day to all Americans far from home.”

Planning regulations relating to the flying of flags – liberalised in 2012 – are set out in the Department for Communities and Local Government’s Plain English guide to flying flags of which we are cognisant.  And there are no specific restrictions on the flags that may be flown from churches.  Any appropriate flag may be used, subject to the wishes of the incumbent and PCC.  Westminster Abbey (albeit a Royal Peculiar) flies all sorts.

Flags flown recently at Christ Church include those of:

Australia:  to welcome back (by popular demand) Revd Ray Low on a visit from Boston MA.

India:  on Republic Day, Independence Day and Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, in appreciation of all the Indian community brings to our church.

Italy:  for a wedding (of two local ice cream sellers); likewise Australia and New Zealand.

Kenya (before) and India (afterwards) for another wedding:  not both at the same time as requested by the vicar (that’s not allowed!)

Saint Helena:  for the wedding of two expatriates from this British overseas territory, many of whom live around Swindon because of its proximity to RAF Brize Norton.  It was a particular pleasure to raise their flag (a very attractive one) for the first time on such a joyful occasion:  it was acquired following a number of memorial services, in anticipation of more.

Scotland:  within minutes of Andy Murray’s victory in the 2013 Wimbledon men’s singles final (and a photograph of it was e-mailed shortly afterwards by Simon to his aunt in Edinburgh!).  This year it was flown for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Uganda:  for the duration of “Le Tour de Lee”, Bishop Rayfield’s “JOGLE” cycle ride to raise money for the Diocesan link with Uganda (he went the hard way – most “end-to-enders” do “LEJOG”) – and of the subsequent visit to Swindon by the Bishop of Luwero who was both surprised and delighted.

Wales:  in joyful celebration of Margaret Williams’s forty years of outstanding licensed lay ministry.

Zambia:  for a reception in the Community Centre for visitors from Livingstone, hosted by Swindon Town FC’s Football in the Community Trust, and attended by the country’s High Commissioner.

Zimbabwe:  for a charity fund-raising evening in the Community Centre.   And a “multi-nation” flag of composite design (49 countries, including 23 of the 32 competing ones), flown throughout the football World Cup as an antidote to nationalism.  Also used on United Nations Day.   Jamaica is on order for a wedding next year, and we watch and wait for STFC’s elevation to the Championship!

We’re grateful to the Friends of Christ Church who recently paid for a new Diocesan flag to replace the existing one in poor condition:  discoloured and dirty from many years of heavy use, darned and patched.  The new one was flown for the first time on the church’s “birthday”, the 163rd anniversary of its dedication on 7th November 1851.  (See photo – but it was hard to take a good one:  a watched flag never unfurls!)

The new Diocesan flag given by the Friends of Christ Church. Modelled anonymously by James Harris (not the Archdeacon’s assistant)!

The new Diocesan flag given by the Friends of Christ Church. Modelled anonymously by James Harris (not the Archdeacon’s assistant)!

Obtaining it, though, was easier said than done.  An enquiry to the Archdeacon’s assistant (confusingly, James Harris) about where to buy a new one elicited the helpful suggestion of asking Ailsa Palmer at Christ Church, Swindon:  “They’ve got one.  I saw it the other day.”  It was subsequently procured from J W Plant of Leeds – sewn in full compliance with MoD specifications at surprisingly reasonable cost.

Thanks are also due to Daniel Pitt and Mike Palmer for restoring the flagpole to its full height.  Moved to allow site access for the construction of the Community Centre, it had been reinstated in a new socket, designed to be fixed to a concrete “raft” at surface level, but wrongly installed by the contractors a metre below ground.  Their efforts are also appreciated by Lyn and Margaret Adams, who donated the pole as a memorial to family members and are pleased it’s so well used.

Reinstallation was completed the morning after the Scottish independence referendum, when the Union flag was promptly raised in relief and celebration.  The Queen might or might not have “purred” on the telephone when the Prime Minister informed her of the outcome, but long may she reign over us and them.

Lest anyone is concerned, the additional flags have been obtained at no cost to the church – including one flown for Christian Aid Week, fabricated from scratch using two pieces of fabric, one red, one white.  Its “mirror image” design, of red-on-white on one side, and white-on-red on the reverse, was so convincing that the CAW coordinator thought his official banner had been relocated from the churchyard railings!

Old Town Nativity Trail Competition

2015-01-02T20:30:53+00:00

In the weeks running up to Christmas, we are having a “Nativity Trail” around the shops of Old Town whereby you have to look in the shops listed below to find one figure that is in the Christmas storyKnit2. All our figures have been beautifully hand knitted by local volunteers and we hope will be readily identifiable. Other crib characters will not count – IT MUST BE A KNITTED ONE!

We hope the figures will be in place by the time the Christmas lights are switched on in Old Town and will remain in place until Christmas Eve.  If you would like to take part, write which figure you find in each of the shops listed with your name and age filled in.  The correct answers will be revealed at the Crib service at Christ Church which is at 4pm on Christmas Eve so bring your form back then or put it in the box at the back of Christ Church. Happy hunting!

Here is the list of shops taking part:-   You can download an entry form here.
