As 2012 is Olympic year, we thought we would issue a challenge to the people of Swindon - we
all know the theory that exercise lengthens your life and makes you happier. So what are you
doing about it? Why not sign up for the 160km challenge? You can take part in
some of our suggested events such as local rambles, historic church
cycle rides, or join in with other local
charity events such as the Prospect cycle ride or the Swindon Half Marathon or Fun run. You can
follow some of our suggested running or walking routes or swim 300 lengths at Milton Road Baths
for 10km. You can do your own thing. The important thing is that you get out there and do it.
Sign up as an individual, a family unit, a team or register and look for a 160km buddy to support each
other to get 160km's worth of exercise into the next 12 months. Create a log in and password on this website and
record your progress to fitness over the next 12 months. Visit the site regularly to find out what is
going on. If you're interested, you can find the sign up page here.
You'll be able to see your own progress, how others are doing and get lots of ideas on how to
complete the challenge. There are links to local running and walking groups as well as suggested
local walks and runs that you can do to make up your k's.
This year marks the 160th anniversary of Christ Church in Swindon. Within Swindon, Christ Church
is a gem, one of the very few Grade 2 star listed buildings, of its age, still in continuous daily use. We
are now looking to create a 21st century future for it by ensuring that it remains central to Swindon.
Our vision is that Christ Church, its community centre and the grounds welcome growing numbers
of people throughout the week. The renewal work that we undertake will be guided by an overall
strategy of creating sustainable, energy efficient, environmentally responsible buildings that will
be more cost effective to run. In the church, we will preserve and restore the original features of
the building and enhance its capabilities to deliver excellent sound, lighting and visual experiences
to both church goers and other visitors. It will provide a warm and adaptable space for worship,
exhibitions, meetings and concerts as well as remaining a place of peace and reflection. We believe
that we have a responsibility to preserve it; not simply as a monument, but as a working, vibrant,
educational and useful place - at the centre of the community.
At the same time, we are replacing and extending our current leisure centre to provide more
flexible, cost effective and improved facilities to the local community. Our new community centre
will put excellent meeting, leisure and refreshment amenities into the heart of Old Town. Like the
thousands of people who raised the 8,500 it took to build the original Christ church 160 years ago,
we would love you to help us to raise money so that we, like them, can keep Christ Church and its
work at the heart of Swindon.
We need to raise 160k towards the cost of renewing the church and replacing and extending the
Community centre at Christ Church. More than anything we want you to take part in the challenge
- cycle for Prospect, run for your favourite charity - engage with your local community, get out and
about, meet people and get fit. Everyone is welcome. Keep track of your progress by signing up.
If you would also like to help us create new improved facilities for Old Town by building a new
community centre and renewing the interior of the church to provide a unique space for concerts,
exhibitions, worship and meetings then get some sponsors.
You can do this in several ways -
