The Friends of Christ Church is a charity separate from the church,
focussing on fundraising for the building of Christ Church and community
Enhancing the beauty and usefulness of the building of Christ Church is the current aim of the Friends of Christ Church.
Most recently we have been funding improvements in the chancel. We are excited about the proposed changes to the main part
of the church to make it lighter, warmer and more welcoming.
The Friends was launched in 2001 as a separate charity, initially to raise funds for repairing the church spire -
a Swindon landmark. Five years later the spire work was completed. Since then we have funded work on the church grounds,
including landscaping and installing a handrail. We have purchased useful items for the church community.
And we made a significant contribution to the development of the new Community Centre@Christ Church, another beautiful building
which is in constant use by the local community.
Christ Church Choir named their first CD in honour of the Spire work – Skyline Sounds. Following its success,
the Friends contributed to the beauty of music in our church by funding two more CDs, Skyline Sounds II and III.
You can hear excerpts and order them on this page.
Every year we organise a Christmas Charity Market, a fundraising and networking opportunity for local charities.
We have held three annual lectures, “Sacred Land” by the Revd Martin Palmer, “God’s Trees” by Professor Julian Evans and “Giving children a lifelong love of reading”
by author Neil Griffiths. The church building is used for all sorts of events. Some examples include the Old Town Festival, the Old Town Beer Festival,
the Old Town Autumn Fayre, the Swindon Music Festival and concerts hosted by Swindon Cares and others. Christ Church welcomes applications from local
organisations for the use of the building.
There are now over 100 members of the Friends stretching from Boston and Minnesota in USA to New Zealand. We do our best to keep them in touch with developments at Christ Church with St Mary’s by means of newsletters as well as an annual report and AGM.
